Meet the Maker - Kim Chin

Kim's collection consists of original linocut designs transformed into standalone artwork or digitally printed products using sustainable methods, such as recycled papers and vegetable-based inks for her cards, and small-run production to minimise waste.

Kim Chin is a textiles artist, facilitator, and community organiser residing in Southeast London. Her rich cultural background, which comprises Filipino, Chinese, and Jamaican roots, has influenced her love for vibrant patterns, colours, and storytelling. Having worked for global fashion brands in Europe, North America, and Canada for 15 years, she realised the wasteful practices in the fashion and lifestyle industry contradicted her passion for design.

2019 Kim moved back to London to live with her mother temporarily. However, the pandemic struck, and during the lockdown period, she reflected on changes in attitudes and customs she observed while away. Kim reconnected with her love for print through creating art. Her work brings people together through their vibrant colours and visual play.

"As a 2nd generation migrant, I am grateful for the privileges afforded by my parents, grandma, and great-grandfather's drive for a better life in a new country. This respect deepened when I migrated for work - especially overcoming the feeling of not belonging. My work celebrates life learnings that liberate my making and continue the legacies of my resilient and brave ancestors before me."
